Bob Williams

(25 January 1949 to 19 October 2021)

A tribute to Bob who died on 19 October 2021 by his brother Paul

Bob was born in Cymbran, he went to Primary School in Llanelli, Grammar School in Clitheroe, Lancs and to College in Barnstaple, North Devon.  Bob passed 'O' and 'A' Levels, he attained a diploma in Business Studies.  In later life, his 60s, Bob achieved a Masters Degree in Caribbean Studies.  As a student Bob enjoyed soccer and rugby. His first job was as a Sales Rep with Proctor and Gamble before moving to London to work for Gascoigne Pees, Christie & Co. then onto a directorship at Business Sales Group.

Among his successes were the early acquisitions for Slug and Lettuce, Magic Pub Co. and JD Wetherspoons. In school, sport and work Bob's motto was very much "enjoyment before achievement".

Bob joined Centaurs in 1969 and immediately found his home and long term friendships. He began playing in the centre and gradually moved into the pack where he found more fun being next to his mates.

He was a reasonable all-round player whether playing for the "sons of fun", the "super sevens" or the first fifteen.

Bob also helped to organise the Centaurs Tours, the Decade of Decadence.  He was a founding member of the "9.30 Society", "the back seat bar" and instrumental in arranging the Chairman's Sherry Mornings.

His responsibilities ended when Ron Ray Reg's Coach left Centaurs Car Park.

When Rugby Days were over Bob helped organise the Seniors Golf Tours.  While the standard of golf varied the entertainment was always first class.  Early evening wine tasting always in Bob's bedroom before going out on the town.

In 1980 Bob, with his brother Paul and Fatty May, bought The Pre Hotel in St. Albans. Many a Centaur will remember New Years Even parties with Bob as Mein Host.

Outside of Rugby and Golf Bob loved Reggae Music and his holidays in St. Lucia, where he spent 2-3 weeks every year with his family and friends.

Bob enjoyed his life, he loved his wife Trisha and his boys Adam and Ollie more than anything and also his extended family.

He was a true Centaur and is missed every day.
