Huw Hopkins

(23 October 1957 - 3 December 2023)

A tribute to Huw who died on 3 December 2023 by  Gareth Hopkins and Simon Wheeler

Huw died of cardiac issues in December 2023.  He was born in Cardiff in 1957, a younger brother to Gareth, and followed him to the local junior school and on to senior school (Whitchurch High School) where he flourished academically and in sport.

He was a regular in the school rugby XV despite his small stature, for which his stroppiness and skill compensated.  His strongest sport at school was cricket, and he represented the county during those years as a talented young batsman with a flowing cover drive.

He went to Keele University at 18 to study Modern History & Politics and played for the University 1st XV at Scrum Half.  After Uni he moved to London and he followed Gareth in joining Centaurs.  He quickly adapted to the social mores of Centaurs and became a big part of the Saturday night entertainment with his amazing impersonations of Cliff Richard & Nat King Cole.

He brought along a few mates to the club in the ample figures of Simon Wheeler and the more svelte centre Dai Barling, who added to the club on & off the field

Huw had a high-powered job in Whitehall for 25 years before taking a job offer from British Midland airlines, but his move to the private sector did not work out as the business failed & he was made redundant after a few years.

Sadly Huw developed alcohol dependency around the time of his losing his job which badly affected the last 15 years or so of his life. He moved back to Cardiff and led a fairly isolated existence always accompanied by a bottle of red.  The gregarious, entertaining, bright and sociable Huw was no longer there and he passed away age 66 as a shadow of his former self, a small person with a big character.
